On Monday Feb 16th one of the largest Brazilian television news networks, GLOBONews, interviewed Gaia’s Ryan McEvoy about water efficiency solutions and regulations in California. In addition to interviewing Ryan in California, GLOBONews is also filming in Sydney and Singapore as part of a series about worldwide water conservation.
During the nearly 4-hour interview Ryan used his house as a case study to demonstrate how it is possible to save water using simple solutions. Here are a couple pointers we learned from the demonstration:
— If you have a pool, put a cover on it! – it could save 30% to 50% of the water from evaporation. A cover can also conserve energy used to heat the pool (http://energy.gov/energysaver/articles/swimming-pool-covers)
— WaterSense fixtures – Ryan demonstrated his efficient kitchen faucet with an aerator and his shower head with 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm)! …The average is 2.5 gpm!
— Rainwater capture systems are excellent for irrigation
— Synthetic grass and drought tolerant plants are easy solutions for the garden.
“The average residential customer spends about 60% of their water on outdoor irrigation. There are rebates available for $2.00 or more per square foot of turf removed!
Mulch will help to conserve moisture, lower soil temperature—especially around a plants’ roots. Mulching can also prevent erosion and helps reduce weed growth.” – explained Ryan.
